SERVICE INFORMATION

Announcing the new digital Volvo Battery analyzer 3100, part number 9511485-6.

Engineered in conjunction with Volvo Car Corporation in Sweden and Midtronics, Inc., this tool is Volvo approved and features Volvo specific software for testing of Volvo batteries and is required for warranty claim submission.

Volvo Battery Analyzer 3100 (tester), Part Number 9511485-6, has been classified as required, and will be allocated to all U.S. and Canadian Volvo retailers in June, 1998 by Volvo Cars of North America, Inc. and Volvo Canada Ltd. You will be billed for the tool on your parts account.

CONDUCTANCE TECHNOLOGY

The Volvo Battery Analyzer 3100 is based on the measurement of conductance which measures a battery's ability to produce current.

It is a measure of the plate surface available in the battery, which determines how much power the battery can supply. As a battery ages, the plate surface can sulfate or shed active material. This reduces the battery's ability to deliver current. It is the fastest, safest and easiest test method available for accurately determining a battery's true state of health. This technology, pioneered by Midtronics, allows for a test method that accurately compensates for low battery charge. It also separates the battery's condition from state of charge, thereby permitting accurate assessment of discharged batteries.

BATTERY TESTING & WARRANTY

A significant portion of battery warranty expense is caused by a lack of accurate battery testing. Standard load testing procedures require batteries to have at least a 75% state of charge (approximately 12.4 volts or greater). Since most returned batteries are discharged, they have to be charged before using a load test for accurate test results. The Volvo Battery Analyzer 3100 can be used on any battery, with a voltage reading as low as 5.5 volts, and, a test can be performed immediately without the hassle of charging and load testing.

The Volvo Battery Analyzer 3100 contains a test code that must be recorded on battery warranty claims for reimbursement. Details will be published in an upcoming Service Manager Bulletin.
