SERVICE INFORMATION

For all 1983 cars equipped with automatic transmission, Volvo maintenance schedule recommends a transmission oil change every 22,500 miles (40,000 km).

WARNING: The oil may be very hot, if the vehicle was recently driven.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE

Drain Oil

REMOVE

  • Disconnect oil tube (later models)
  • Oil pan and gasket
  • Oil filter and magnet

Clean all removed parts and check oil filter.

INSTALL

  • Oil filter and magnet
  • New gasket and oil pan
  • Oil filler tube
  • Drain plug (if applicable)

Torque bolts as follows (see Fig 2 )

RECOMMENDED OIL: ATF TYPE F/G

INITIAL OIL FILL QUANTITIES

BW55/AW55 3.4 liters 3.6 quarts
AW71/70 3.3 liters 3.5 liters

Add 0.3 liters (0.3 qt) for vehicles equipped with an oil cooler. Recheck level and adjust as necessary.

CAUTION: If oil is discolored or smells burnt, clean oil cooler system.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE

  1. Disconnect the oil pipe at the radiator.
    NOTE: B21/B23/D24 Disconnect upper connector
    B27/B28 Disconnect lower connector
  2. Install a drain hose on the radiator connection. See Fig 3 .
  3. Overfill the transmission by approximately 0.3 liter (0.3 qt).
  4. Start the engine and let idle. Collect the contaminated oil at the oil drain hose in a suitable container.
  5. Stop the engine as soon as clean oil comes out of the drain hose. Reconnect the oil pipe at the radiator.

    CAUTION: Ensure transmission is not operated without oil during the procedure.
  6. Fill with oil. Start engine and let idle.
  7. Check the oil and adjust if necessary.
  8. Check for leakage. See Fig 4 for dipstick markings.
