TECHNICAL INFORMATION TIP
REMOVING RUSTED CRANKSHAFT TIMING BELT SPROCKET
YEAR(S): 1990-98
MANUFACTURER: Subaru
MODEL(S): Legacy
DATE OF ISSUE: December 1998
ISSUE & TIP
When replacing the timing belt on a Subaru Legacy, we suggest to our customers that the front crankshaft seal also be replaced. More often than not, the seal begins to leak between recommended timing belt replacement intervals.
Removing the crankshaft timing belt sprocket can be difficult if it has rusted to the crankshaft. While some sprockets have threaded holes to facillitate removal with a puller, others have unthreaded holes. Using a 8 X 1.25 mm tap, you may thread these unthreaded sprocket holes without having to drill the holes any larger. Use bolts that are long enough to attach a puller to the sprocket, without having to remove the radiator.
