Shift Linkage Assemble

  1. If the shift control lever assembly was disassembled, perform the following step to reassemble.
    2. IMPORTANT: The springs and spring seats are 2 different lengths. Refer to the illustration for the correct spring orientation.
  2. Install the springs and spring seats, compress the spring seats, and install the new spring seat retainers.

  3. If any shift forks, shift shafts, or shift shaft blocks were disassembled, reassemble the shift shafts by driving new retaining pins into the shift forks or shift shaft blocks.

    IMPORTANT: While assembling shafts, ensure that the shift shaft block notches line up.
  4. Install the 1st/2nd shift shaft.
    1. Insert the detent spring and detent ball through the opening in the shift lever bracket.
    2. Compass the ball and spring using a screwdriver and install the shift shaft. Place the shaft in the neutral position.

  5. Insert the shift shaft interlock ball between the 1st/2nd shaft and the 3rd/4th shaft. Install the interlock pin in the 3rd/4th shaft.
    6. IMPORTANT: The 1st/2nd shift shaft inserts into the 3rd/4th shift fork.
  6. Install the 3rd/4th detent spring and ball. Compress the ball and spring, and install the 3rd/4th shift shaft. Place the shaft in the neutral position.

  7. Insert the shift shaft interlock ball between the 3rd/4th shaft and 5th shaft. Install the interlock pin in the 5th shaft.
  8. Install the 5th detent spring and ball. Compress the ball and spring and install the 5th shift shaft. Place the shaft in the neutral position.

  9. Insert the shift shaft interlock ball between the 5th shaft and the reverse shaft.
  10. Install the reverse detent spring and ball. Compress the ball and spring and install the reverse shift shaft. Place the shaft in the neutral position.

    IMPORTANT: Ensure that the shift control lever engages the shift blocks.
    IMPORTANT: Make sure that the shift control lever shaft pin is centered into the shift control shaft during installation.
  11. Install the shift control lever assembly into the shift lever bracket. Press in the shift control lever shaft and tap in a new shift control lever shaft pin.
