DTC P0340: Camshaft Position Signal Malfunction

  1. Connect TECH 2 scan tool to DLC. Check for presence of DTCs. If DTC(s) P0106-P0133, P0135, P0171, P0172, P0300-P0304, P0335, P0441-P0445 OR P1171 are present, go to appropriate diagnostic test. If none of the preceding codes are present, go to next step.
  2. Unplug ignition discharge module (IDM) harness connector. Turn ignition on. Use DVOM to measure voltage between IDM harness connector terminal No. 8 (Yellow/Brown wire) and ground. See Figure . Voltage reading should be about 10 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair faulty circuit between IDM harness connector terminal No. 8 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 17 (Yellow/Brown wire). ECM is next to glove box on right side. See Figure for ECM terminal identification. Go to step  4 .
  3. Measure voltage between IDM harness connector terminal No. 9 (Brown/Red wire) and ground. Voltage reading should be around 10 volts. If reading is as specified, replace spark plugs. If reading is not as specified, repair faulty circuit between IDM harness connector terminal No. 9 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 18 (Brown/Red wire). Go to next step.
  4. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Drive vehicle for 5 minutes under varying loads and engine RPM. Recheck for any stored DTCs. If DTC P0340 is present, substitute known good ECM and retest system. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article.
