NS16, Code 11 - Checking Distributor Pick-Up CKT

  1. Turn ignition off and unplug distributor pick-up harness connector. Remove coil wire from distributor and place 1/4" from good engine ground. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Connect jumper wire to distributor pickup harness connector cavity No. 2 and No. 3. Make and break this connection several times while observing coil wire. If there is spark at coil wire, go to next step. If there is no spark at coil wire, go to step 3).
  2. Turn ignition on and unplug distributor pick-up harness connector. Connect voltmeter to cavity No. 1 of distributor pick-up harness and ground. If voltmeter reads at least 7 volts, replace distributor pick-up. If voltmeter reads zero, check wire in cavity No. 1 for open circuit to wiring harness splice.

  3. Turn ignition on and unplug distributor pickup harness connector. Connect positive lead of voltmeter to cavity No. 3 of distributor pickup harness connector. Connect negative lead of volt-meter to cavity No. 2 of distributor pickup harness. If voltmeter reads at least 4 volts, replace engine control module. If voltmeter reads zero, go to next step.

  4. Before replacing pick, up, ensure distributor harness connector terminals are not spread apart causing a poor connection. Also ensure distributor rotor turns while cranking engine. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, repair Orange wire to connector cavity No. 1 for an open wiring harness splice.
  5. With ignition on, connect positive voltmeter lead to distributor pick-up harness connector cavity No. 3. Connect negative voltmeter lead to distributor pick-up harness connector cavity No. 2. If voltmeter reading is at least 4 volts, replace SMEC.

  6. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, connect positive voltmeter lead to distributor pick-up harness connector cavity No.3 Connect negative voltmeter lead to a good engine ground. If voltmeter reading is at least 4 volts, repair Black/Light Blue wire in distributor connector cavity No. 2 for an open circuit to wiring harness splice.
  7. If voltmeter reading is zero volts, turn ignition off. Disconnect 60-pin connector from SMEC. Connect an ohmmeter to distributor connector cavity No. 3 and 60-Pin connector cavity No. 47 for an open circuit to distributor pick-up harness connector.
