DTC P0510: Closed Throttle Position (TP) Switch: Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between TP switch harness connector terminal No. 5 (Brown wire) and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Yellow wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 27 and TP switch harness connector terminal No. 6. See Figure. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  3. Reconnect all harness connectors. Adjust TP switch. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR in ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP switch harness connector. Check continuity between TP switch terminals No. 5 and 6. See Fig 1. Continuity should exist when accelerator pedal is released. Continuity should not exist when accelerator pedal is depressed. If operation is as specified, go to next step. If operation is not as specified, replace TP sensor and retest system.
  4. Reconnect all harness connectors. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Stop engine and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 23 by backprobing, with throttle in specified positions. See THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR VOLTAGE  table. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace TP sensor and retest system.
  5. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
