SITUATION
IT IS NO LONGER REQUIRED TO OBTAIN AN AUTHORIZATION FROM THE TECHNICAL HOTLINE PRIOR TO CVT (CONSTANTLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION) REPLACEMENT.
When diagnosing symptoms involving CVT transmissions and determining when a replacement is appropriate, properly trained technician must utilize all available diagnostic tools and resources.
These include but are not limited to: Service Information Bulletins, TIS, Service Technology Bulletins (SBT), DCS messages, Bonnet Boot & Wings, Training Manuals, Repair Manual Instructions and GT1/DIS Functional Descriptions.
All required checks must be performed on the affected vehicle. For example: test drives to duplicate customer's complaint must be performed, transmission/engine control module memories must be interrogated and all appropriate GT1/DIS diagnostic test plans must be executed. Electrical power and ground connections must be inspected; circuit integrity must be verified, as well as vehicle service history must be reviewed. Also, if required, Shop Forman/Team leader must be consulted for additional assistance.
When the results of diagnosis are conclusive (e.g. internal transmission failure) there is no need to contact Technical Hotline for part replacement authorization.
Only in cases, when all diagnostic resources were exhausted without a conclusion, you can contact Technical Hotline/Drivetrain via PuMA system for additional assistance.
When creating a PuMA case regarding a CVT transmission complaint, please ensure that it contains the following information:
- A full description of the complaint and whether or not the complaint has been verified.
- A detailed description of the operating conditions, environment, road conditions, anything related to the complaint or conditions under which it can be duplicated. The details must be sufficient to ensure that the person reading your case will be able to understand the situation and/or duplicate it if necessary.
- Identify any work performed during each service visit for the same complaint.
- Results of tests performed, i.e. measurement of wiring harness resistance values, etc. Always provide specific readings. Statements such as "in spec" are not adequate.
- Include "CVT" in the subject line and the transmission serial number in the "Work Performed" field of your case. Also include the transmission fluid level and condition. If the problem concerns shift characteristics, include the specific shift (i.e. 1-2 or 5-4) that is causing the complaint.
- Where fault codes are stored, include the name of the module concerned in "problem description" and the actual fault codes in the "fault code" box.
- In order to aid the Technical Hotline Specialist in diagnosis, your diagnostic tester must have transmitted FASTA data indicating that all relevant test modules have been completed.
