Forward & Coasting Clutch Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Assemble coasting clutch components in reverse order of disassembly. See Fig 1 . Apply ATF to NEW seals. Ensure alignment mark on spring retainer is aligned with check ball of coasting clutch piston. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between snap ring and coasting clutch pressure plate. See Fig 2 . Clearance should be .028-.043" (.70-1.10 mm). Service limit is .067" (1.70 mm). If clearance is not within specification, install correct pressure plate.
  2. Pressure plates range in thickness from .118" (3.00 mm) to .150" (3.80 mm), in .008" (.20 mm) increments. Assemble forward clutch components in reverse order of disassembly. Apply ATF to NEW seals. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between snap ring and forward clutch pressure plate. See Fig 3 . Clearance should be .018-.033" (.45-.85 mm). Service limit is .073" (1.85 mm). If clearance is not within specification, install correct pressure plate.
  3. Pressure plates range in thickness from .126" (3.20 mm) to .173" (4.40 mm), in .008" (.20 mm) increments. Apply compressed air to piston check ball oil holes to air check forward and coasting clutch operation.
