Remove/install steering column tube - AR46.10-P-0400W

MODEL 172

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch on ignition and leave transmitter key or KEYLESS-GO start/stop button inserted in electronic ignition lock control unit IMPORTANT KEYLESS-GO start/stop button only with code (889) Keyless-Go.
The transmitter key or the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button must not be removed during the entire work procedure. It must also not be removed when the ground line is disconnected from the on-board electrical system battery. The electric steering lock control unit (N26/5) will otherwise lock and can then not be removed.
 
2 Move steering column tube (1) fully forward and upward    
3 Rotate the steering wheel to the center position IMPORTANT Front wheels in straight-ahead position.  
4 Remove steering column tube module   AR54.25-P-2802EW
5 Remove cover (2) below dashboard.    
6 Remove accelerator pedal Vehicles with code (275) Memory package for electrically adjustable front seats AR30.12-P-1321CW
7 Disconnect electrical connector at steering column in/out adjustment motor (M20/1) and at steering column up/down adjustment motor (M20/2) Vehicles with code (275) Memory package for electrically adjustable front seats  
8 Disconnect electrical connector from electric steering lock control unit (N26/5)    
9 Remove lower steering shaft (3) from steering column tube (1) and push downward INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the bolt (8) of the clamping connection (9).
The lower steering shaft (3) can only be attached to the steering column tube (1) in a certain position.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1007-01E 
10 Remove bolts (4, 5, 6, 7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw in all bolts (4, 5, 6, 7) loosely. Tighten the upper right bolt (6) first and then the lower right bolt (4). Then tighten the left bolts (5, 7).

11 Tilt steering column tube (1) to right and remove through footwell NOTES Vehicles with code (275) Memory package for electrically adjustable front seats:
The steering column in/out adjustment motor (M20/1) and the steering column up/down adjustment motor (M20/2) are extremely sensitive to lateral forces and impacts. Do not handle the steering column tube (1) by the steering column in/out adjustment motor (M20/1) or the steering column up/down adjustment motor (M20/2). These components will otherwise be damaged.
 
12 Remove electric steering lock control unit (N26/5) from steering column tube (1) When installing a new steering column tube (1). AR46.10-P-0920W 
13 Install in the reverse order
