COMPLAINT

No-load current too high, causing discharge of the battery.

CAUSE

Two possible causes have been defined:

  1. When the remote trunk lid release is operated on a secured (locked) vehicle, the lid is automatically unlocked and opened. When the trunk lid is closed, the rear SAM remains awake until both the trunk lid lock contact and the spare tire carrier contact are closed again. If there is no spare tire carrier installed, the rear SAM remains permanently awake until the next time the vehicle is unlocked/locked due to a software error, and this causes the battery to discharge. The CAN bus is not kept awake.
  2. The fault has been rectified as of 01/08 at the factory with VIN ... A370977 (for model series 164) and ... A076569 (for model series 251).

  3. The steering column tube switch module is keeping the CAN bus awake due to a software error.
  4. The fault has been rectified as of 07/08 at the factory with VIN ... A441045 (for model series 164) and ... A089020 (for model series 251).

REMEDY

  1. Software update of rear SAM as of DVD 07/2008.
  2. Replacement of steering column tube switch module (part no. A 164 545 85 16)

Check VMI to see if the vehicle is flagged for Service Campaign 2008110009 . If it is, and you are using software that is more recent than DVD 04/09, please close out the campaign for the vehicle.
