TECHNICIANS USING STAR DIAGNOSIS SYSTEMS DURING A ROAD TEST

SERVICE INFORMATION

WARNING: Risk of injury of personal injury when using Star Diagnosis systems during a road test.

Use of the diagnostics equipment while occupying the front passenger seat, while the vehicle is being operated, can in an accident, result in potentially serious injuries resulting from an interaction between that equipment and the deploying airbag. In the event of a collision, the deployment of the airbag can catapult the relatively hard device toward the passengers. For this reason the passenger airbag must be deactivated when using such equipment in the front passenger seat. The approved method of doing this in vehicles equipped with BabySmart(tm) automatic child seat recognition system (ACSR), is to properly place the "Airbag- Off seat cushion" on the front passenger seat. This cushion is available as a Mercedes-Benz Special Tool and will be automatically shipped to each dealer. For more information, please refer to the advisory below and the procedure that follows.

In order to avoid or at least minimize the risk of injury, please use the following precautions:

During a vehicle road test, the only diagnostic devices allowed are "STAR DIAGNOSIS Compact", "Compact II", "Compact MT and Compact II MT" with Measurement Technology, and "STAR DIAGNOSIS Basic".

PROCEDURE

A. DEACTIVATE PASSENGER AIRBAG

NOTE: The unplugging of the connector from the passenger airbag is displayed as a fault via the SRS malfunction indicator lamp.
  1. With BabySmart(tm):  Use "AIRBAG-OFF seat cushion" on the front passenger seat as padding.
NOTE: Airbag shut off occurs automatically and is signaled via the "AIRBAG OFF" indicator lamp.
  2. Without BabySmart(tm):  Unplug connectors at the passenger airbag (refer to WIS 91.60 for airbag disconnect procedure, found in removal of front passenger airbag procedure).
NOTE: SRS malfunction indicator lamp illuminates in the instrument cluster.

B. REACTIVATE PASSENGER AIRBAG

  1. Upon completion of the road test reconnect passenger airbag if previously disconnected.
  2. Remove "AIRBAG-OFF" seat cushion if used.

ERASE THE DTC MEMORY FROM THE SRS CONTROL MODULE

If the airbag was disconnected, erase the DTC from the SRS control module upon completion of the road test.
