Noises at the Instrument Panel
SERVICE INFORMATION
This bulletin is intended to assist in finding an effective solution to the complex topic of customer reports about "noise".
Possible causes for noises from the Instrument Panel:

I. NOISES IN AREA OF INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AT INSTRUMENT PANEL WOOD TRIM STRIP
Up to VIN 392658
Cause: The wood trim strip rubs against the instrument cluster (Arrow, Fig 2).
This causes creaking noises.
- Remove instrument cluster (See WIS-document AR54.30-P-6015I)
- Apply approx. 1.5 ml Special Sliding Compound onto the upper edge of the wood trim strip (Fig 2).
- Install instrument cluster (See WIS-document AR54.30-P-6015I).
II. CRACKING NOISE IN THE AREA OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DEFROSTER VENT AIR DUCTING
Up to VIN 398923
Cause: Air ducting of defroster vent comes into contact with the instrument panel.
Intermittent cracking noise on left side.
- Loosen upper screws (right and left) of instrument panel (1-, 2- Fig 4).
- Pull instrument panel toward driver.
- Tighten screws.
- Conduct a road test.
Noise still present:
- Remove instrument panel (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1000M).
- Insert a 3 cm strip of felt (Arrows, Fig 3 - 2 strips of felt total) tightly between defroster vent and air ducting on the side.
- Install instrument panel (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1000M).
III. NOISES BETWEEN INSTRUMENT PANEL AND COMAND
Up to VIN 368543
Cause: COMAND rubs against instrument panel.
- Remove COMAND.

- Glue a 12 cm felt strip (Fig 5 - 2 strips of felt total) onto the left and right sides of the COMAND cutout.
- Install COMAND.

IV. RATTLING NOISE IN AREA OF THE CENTER TOWER REAR VENTILATION AIR DUCT
Up to VIN 368543
Cause: The center tower rear ventilation air duct contacts the footwell duct.
- Pull out footwell carpet at right of center tower.
- Glue four 6 cm strips of felt between rear ventilation air duct and footwell duct (1-Fig 6).
- Replace footwell carpet at right of center tower.
V. RATTLING NOISE IN AREA OF THE CENTER TOWER REAR VENTILATION AIR DUCT
Up to VIN 404697
Cause: The tab of the rear ventilation air duct rattles against the mounting strip for the instrument panel.
- Remove ashtray (See WIS-document AR68.20-P-2400M).
- Remove AAC operating and control unit (N22) (See WIS-document AR83.40-P-6350M).
- Glue two 2 cm strips of felt between instrument panel mounting strip and rear ventilation air duct (Fig 7 and Fig 8 - 4 strips of felt total).
- Install AAC operating and control unit (N22) (See WIS-document AR83.40-P-6350M).
- Install ashtray (See WIS-document AR68.20-P-2400M).
VI. RATTLING NOISE AT ASHTRAY
Up to VIN 392658
Cause: Ashtray makes contact with the air duct.
- Remove ashtray (See WIS-document AR68.20-P-2400M).
- Glue two 8 cm strips of felt over the lower right corner of the ashtray housing (1-Fig 9).
- Install ashtray (See WIS-document AR68.20-P-2400M).
VII. VIBRATIONS NOISES FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL
Up to VIN 404697
Cause: Front passenger airbag cable tie comes into contact with the air duct.
- Remove right side air outlet (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1100M).
- Insert a 2 cm strip of felt or foam material firmly between the tie and the instrument panel air duct (Fig 10).
- Install right side air outlet (See WIS-document AR68.10-P-1100M).
