THE NEW DRIVE AUTHORIZATION SYSTEMS
As of Model Year 1997, the Drive Authorization System version 2 (DAS-2) known from Model Year 1996 (refer to SI MBNA 80/06 ) is further refined.
DAS 2A
In the brief time period between the start of E420 (model 210.027) production (01/96) and the beginning of main series production for Model Year 1997 (06/96), an interim system, known as DAS-2a, is installed in E420 vehicles. This system is identified by the presence of a transponder ring (L11, Fig. Fig 1 ) around the ignition lock and the absence of exterior IR receivers.
DAS X
As of Model Year 1997 (06/96 production), all models are equipped with an updated Drive Authorization System, known as DAS X. This system incorporates the vehicle security features of DAS-2a with the convenience of exterior RCL sensors. This system is identified by the presence of exterior IR receivers and a transponder ring (L11, Fig. Fig 1 ) around the ignition lock.
IMPORTANT FEATURES
- RCL (vehicle locking) and DAS (engine disablement) functions are separated: The locked or unlocked condition of the vehicle no longer affects the ability of the engine to start.
- The IR and mechanical door/trunk lock portions of the system control the Central Locking (CL), Convenience Feature (CF) and Anti-Theft Alarm (ATA) systems.
- The new transponder system controls engine start authorization.
- The DAS X system uses two control modules: an RCL module and a DAS module. DAS-2a uses only one module.
- The DAS X system has three IR sensors, whose location depends on model (Fig. Fig 3 ). The DAS 2a system has only one IR sensor, located in the interior rearview mirror.
SPARE PARTS
As before, the DAS 2, 2a and X control modules must be coded for a specific VIN. In addition, with DAS versions 2a and X, all keys (including\mechanical keys) contain transponders, and thus must be coded to the VIN. For DAS-2a and X, a maximum of eight (8) keys: (both IR plus mechanical) may exist for a given vehicle. Since four are provided with the vehicle when new, up to four additional keys may be ordered via Spare Parts. However, each key transponder is unique, so if a key is lost, it can be replaced with another key with the same key "number" (1 to 8).
It is not possible to have two keys with the same key "number" - one will be automatically disabled by the control module. Supplied with the vehicle are two IR transmitter keys (1, Fig. Fig 2 ), one flat (mechanical) key (2, Fig. Fig 2 ) and one round-head valet key (mechanical key) (3, Fig. Fig 2 ). A mechanical master key is not available as a spare part, although the flat key has all the functions of a mechanical master key, without the large square head.
COMPONENTS
DAS-2a consists of the following components:
- IR transmitter (remote key)
- IR receiver (at interior rearview mirror)
- Mechanical switches (at driver's door and trunk locks)
- Transponder chip (embedded in each key)
- DAS control module (located behind instrument cluster)
- Electrical coil surrounding ignition lock (L11, Fig. Fig 1 ).
- Flasher Relay (CCM)
- Engine control module
DAS X has these additional components:
- Two additional IR receivers (total of 3 - location depends on model)
- RCL control module
CONTROL MODULE LOCATIONS
In all vehicles, the DAS control module is located behind the instrument cluster. Note that the transponder ring wiring is limited to 500 mm in length. The location of the RCL control module is the same as in previous systems: 202 and 210 - passenger's footwell; 129 - right side of trunk; 140 - under right front dash.
LOCK AND SENSOR ARRANGEMENT
With the introduction of the DAS X system, the arrangement of locks on the front doors is changed. With DAS-2, introduced in all models as of MY' 96, the lock cylinder on the passenger's door was removed, leaving a lock cylinder on the driver's door and the trunk. Additionally, only a single IR sensor, located in the interior rearview mirror, was used. This remained the same with DAS-2a.
In models 129 and 140, the lock arrangement has not changed with DAS X: Both the driver's door and the trunk have fully-functional lock cylinders. However, the IR sensor in the interior rearview mirror is deleted, and replaced by three exterior IR sensors, one located in each front door and one at the trunk. This is similar to the arrangement in MY' 95 vehicles.
In models 202 and 210, only the passenger's door and trunk have lock cylinders - there is no lock cylinder on the driver's door. The IR sensor in the interior rearview mirror remains, and is supplemented by two exterior sensors, one located in the driver's door and one at the trunk.

SYSTEM FUNCTIONS
RCL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS:
- Receives and evaluates IR transmitter signal and door lock switch signal.
- Activates: (assuming correct IR code) Central Locking system (PSE/CL)(locks/unlocks vehicle) Anti-Theft Alarm (ATA)(arms/disarms alarm) Convenience Feature (CF)(closes windows/sunroof remotely)
- Actuates feedback lamps (red/green near sensor, hazard flashers with DAS-2a)
UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE
DAS-2a: Upon receiving either a valid IR code or a ground signal from the driver's door or trunk lock switch (on pin 1.8), the DAS-2a module initiates an unlocking operation, if the system was in the locked condition. Refer to "SN1/SN2 SIGNALS " for details of the unlocking signal.
DAS X: Upon receiving a ground signal from either the front door lock (refer to "LOCK ARRANGEMENT "), the trunk lock, or the RCL control module (on pin 1.8), the DAS X module initiates an unlocking operation if it was in the locked condition. Refer to "SN1/SN2 SIGNALS " for details of the unlocking signal.
In both systems, the green feedback lamp is activated (3 seconds, 3 blinks per second). With DAS-2a, the flashers are also activated (one blink), but only if the system was actuated by an IR signal. No feedback is given if the mechanical key is used.
If the IR transmitter button is pressed twice within 0.8 seconds (previously 0.5 seconds), the DAS system activates the Remote Trunk Release (RTR). The PSE module receives the signal via the unlock signal wire: 140 - A37 pin 1.2 (SN1); 202 - A37 pin C.1 (SN1); 210 - via N10-1 pin A.57 (SN1-2), to PSE over the interior CAN Bus. Model 129 does not have the RTR feature.
If the IR transmitter button is held down, or a mechanical switch is held in the unlock position, the windows and/or sunroof are opened (emergency reversal operation) ONLY IF a comfort closing operation has taken place within the last 15 seconds. That means, if the user was just closing the windows and/or sunroof with the convenience feature (CF) (see explanation following), and initiates an unlocking operation within 15 seconds, the windows and/or sunroof will open again, as an emergency reversing feature. Note that previous versions of RCL operated in the same way.
If no comfort feature closing operation has taken place in the past 15 seconds, the windows and/or sunroof will not open. If the sunroof was not open, or is already fully closed, no emergency reversal will occur for the sunroof.
If the vehicle is in the locked condition and a valid transponder signal is received when the ignition switch (circuit 15) is turned on, the vehicle is unlocked and the green feedback lamp flashes. However, if the vehicle was locked with the interior CL switch, it does not unlock when the ignition is switched on.
LOCKING THE VEHICLE
DAS 2a: Upon receiving a valid IR code, or a ground signal from either the driver's door lock or trunk lock (on pin 1.10), the RCL ECM initiates a locking operation if it was in the unlocked condition.
DAS X: Upon receiving a ground signal from either the front door lock (Refer to "LOCK ARRANGEMENT "), the trunk lock, or the RCL control module (on pin 1.10), the DAS X module initiates a locking operation if it was in the unlocked condition. Refer to SN1/SN2 signals' for details of the locking signal.
The red feedback lamp is activated (3 seconds, 3 blinks per second). With DAS-2a, the flashers are also activated (three blinks), but only if the system was actuated by an IR signal. No feedback is given if the mechanical key is used.
If the IR transmitter button is held down, or a mechanical switch is held in the lock position, the windows and/or sunroof are closed (if open). As long as the transmitter button is held down, the red lamp will flash (up to 30 seconds). The red lamp does not light if the mechanical key is used. This feature will not work from the interior mirror IR receiver.
Note that this process can be reversed in an emergency by either releasing and pressing again the IR transmitter button, or holding the key in the unlock position. However, this emergency reversal feature is only possible within 15 seconds of ending the closing function. Refer to "UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE", above.
CONVENIENCE FEATURE (CF)
The CF system allows the driver to close all open windows and sunroof while locking the vehicle. When locking the vehicle, either with the IR transmitter or the mechanical key, holding the transmitter button or key in the locking position for more than approx. 2 seconds causes the windows and sunroof to be activated in the closing direction. The windows and sunroof continue to close as long as the transmitter button or key is held in the locking position, and stops immediately if either is released. For safety reasons, the closing operation is reversible within 15 seconds of a closing operation as described in "UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE" above.
DAS SYSTEM FUNCTIONS
- Activates coil surrounding ignition switch (L11, Fig. Fig 1 )
- Sends code to transponder chip (in key) and reads response
- Allows engine to start (if transponder sends correct response)
An important difference between DAS 2 (Model year 1996) and DAS 2a/DAS X is that the security of the DAS system is realized as soon as the key is removed from the ignition lock. Previously, if the vehicle was unlocked, DAS allowed the vehicle to start. This required the customer to lock the vehicle to realize the DAS security features.
With the DAS 2a/DAS X (transponder) system, no action by the customer (other than removing the ignition key) is required. Regardless of the locked/unlocked status of the vehicle, or of the IR transmitter batteries, only a key with the correct transponder chip will allow the engine to start. In many states, an insurance discount is offered for such passive anti-theft features.
MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS
- DTC memory
- Diagnosis via CAN-Bus
BATTERY LOW INDICATION
If the IR transmitter detects that its battery is nearly discharged, it slightly modifies the IR code it sends to the RCL ECM. If RCL receives this "low battery" signal more than one time from a specific IR transmitter, it flashes both the red and green lamps at the same time, to indicate the low battery condition.
SYNCHRONIZATION
As with previous systems, each RCL transmitter must be enabled and synchronized to operate the system. Transmitters are enabled via the HHT. To synchronize a transmitter, point it towards the IR receiver and actuate it (by pressing the transmitter button twice). Within 30 seconds, activate circuit 15 (switch ignition on) or actuate either the door or trunk lid CL switch.
TRANSMITTER BLOCKING/DESYNCHRONIZATION
As with previous systems, any IR transmitter can be either temporarily disabled or permanently blocked from operating the system. If temporarily disabled, the transmitter can be re-enabled via the HHT. If permanently blocked, the transmitter can in no case be activated again. Permanent blocking should only be performed with written approval of the customer.
VERSION CODING
When replacing the RCL control module, the new module must be version coded. After a fixed number of circuit 15 activations (255), version coding for VIN, transponder enablement, and door lock switch (SN circuit) enablement is no longer possible. The version coding remains in memory even if the RCL module is disconnected from power. When faced with unusual operation of RCL and related systems, especially PSE/CL, verify that all version coding options are correct. Refer to "HHT INFORMATION " for details of version coding options.
SN1/SN2 SIGNALS
The following charts describe the signals that are sent out from the control module to operate other systems such as CL. These signals are best viewed with an oscilloscope, as they are too brief for a voltmeter to register. A "low" signal is approximately 0 volts, a "high" signal is approx. 12 volts.
| Code | Fault Description | Suggested Action/Possible Fault |
|---|---|---|
| B1000 | Control module - internal fault | Replace RCL module. |
| B1100 | SN1 shorted to (-) or (+) | Check SN1 (pin 1.3) wiring for a short to power or ground, may be intermittent. |
| B1101 | SN2 shorted to (-) or (+) | Check SN2 (pin 1.4) wiring for a short to power or ground, may be intermittent. |
| B1102 | PWM line shorted to (-) or (+) | Not valid for USA. |
| B1103 | Red feedback lamp shorted to (-) or (+) | Check red feedback lamp wiring (pin 1.6) wiring for a short to power or ground, maybe intermittent. |
| B1104 | Green feedback lamp shorted to (-) or (+) | Check green feedback lamp wiring (pin 1.8)wiring for a short to power or ground, maybe intermittent. |
| B1701 | Incorrect DAS code, right bank (via CAN) | Check VIN coding on both the RCL and engine control modules, they may have beenswitched accidentally. Check the CAN-Bus for problems. Can be a sporadic code, caused by momentary communications failure, and not indicate a real problem. |
| B1702 | Incorrect DAS code, left bank (via CAN) | See B1701 above. |
| B1703 | Transponder code not valid. | Wrong transponder chip in key. Wrong key. If code is in memory, but there is no customer complaint and fault frequency is very low it can be ignored. |
| B1704 | Energy could not be built up | Problem with transponder coil or connector. |
| B1706 | Flasher output, shorted to (-) or (+) | Check flasher output (pin 1.13) wiring fora short to power or ground, may be intermittent. |
