Defender & Discovery

  1. Check power steering fluid level in reservoir. Ensure fluid level is at maximum mark on dipstick. Start engine, bring to normal operating temperature and allow it to idle. Recheck power steering fluid level.
  2. Locate bleeder screw on top of steering box. See Figure. DO NOT move steering wheel or increase engine speed. Carefully open bleeder screw until fluid begins to flow. Close bleeder screw and tighten. Ensure fluid level is correct. Clean excess fluid from around bleeder screw.
  3. With engine at idle, turn steering wheel to full lock position in both directions and check for system leaks. To avoid overheating fluid, DO NOT hold steering wheel in full lock position for more than 30 seconds. Allow about 60 seconds for fluid to cool. Repair system leaks as necessary and road test vehicle.
