Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE CONDITION
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, actuate the Radiator High Speed Fan.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
Go to 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK RADIATOR FAN HIGH SPEED RELAY VOLTAGE SUPPLY
- Remove the Radiator Fan High Speed Relay.
- Measure the voltage at pin 86 of the Radiator Fan High Speed Relay at the PDC harness connector.
Is Battery voltage present?
Yes
- Go to 3
No
- Repair the Relay voltage supply circuit open or short. If a fuse is found to be open, check the circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- RADIATOR FAN HIGH SPEED RELAY
- Remove the Radiator Fan High Speed Relay.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, actuate the Radiator High Speed Fan.
- Using a 12-volt test light connected to 12 volts, probe the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit at the relay (Fan Relay terminal 85).
- Compare the brightness to that of a direct connection to the battery.
Does the test light illuminate brightly?
Yes
- Replace the Radiator High Speed Fan Relay in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 4
- CHECK THE (K175) RADIATOR FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Stop the Radiator Fan actuation.
- Turn the ignition off.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)to the engine harness side of the PCM C1 harness connector. Do not connect the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to the PCM.
- Measure the resistance of the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit between the Fan Relay (terminal 85) and the GPEC adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go to 5
No
- Repair the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K175) RADIATOR FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE (K173) RADIATOR FAN SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- With the relay and the PCM C1 connector still disconnected, check for continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and the (K173) Radiator Fan Low Speed Control Signal circuit at the GPEC Adaptor
Is there continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and the (K173) Radiator Fan Low Speed Control Signal circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit for a short to the (K173) Radiator Fan Low Speed Control Signal circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 6
- With the relay and the PCM C1 connector still disconnected, check for continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and the (K173) Radiator Fan Low Speed Control Signal circuit at the GPEC Adaptor
- CHECK THE (K175) RADIATOR FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and all other circuits at the GPEC Adaptor.
Is there continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and any other circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit for a short to another circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go to 7
- Check for continuity between the (K175) Radiator Fan High Speed Control circuit and all other circuits at the GPEC Adaptor.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
