Adjusting Valve Clearance (6.0L)

  1. Remove idler tensioner pulley assembly from right cylinder head. Rotate crankshaft until timing gauge can be inserted into recess of left camshaft. See Fig 1 . Note 2 uppermost camshaft sprocket retaining bolts.

  2. Remove timing gauge and rotate crankshaft until 2 lower camshaft sprocket bolts become accessible. Using a punch and hammer, open lock tabs and remove 2 retaining bolts and lock tab. See Fig 2 . Rotate crankshaft to TDC position and refit timing gauge. Open lock tabs and loosen, but DO NOT  remove, 2 remaining camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove rubber grommet from front of timing cover.
  3. Grommet is located on right side of timing cover just above water pump. Insert chain tensioner releaser through timing cover access hole. See Fig 3 . With a twisting motion, release locking catch on timing chain tensioner. Install chain tensioner retainer. The hook on chain tensioner retainer arm fits into a slot on chain tensioner.

  4. Pull up on chain tensioner retainer and retract timing chain tensioner until locking catch is engaged. Remove 2 remaining camshaft sprocket bolts and lock tab. Install camshaft sprocket retainer to camshaft sprockets. See Fig 2 . Pry camshaft sprocket off of camshaft.
CAUTION: DO NOT  rotate crankshaft with camshaft sprockets removed from crankshaft.
  5. Starting from center, remove camshaft bearing caps one at a time. Note bearing cap-to-camshaft tower relationship. Corresponding numbers are marked on bearing cap and tower. Remove left camshaft. Using a magnet, remove camshaft followers and note location of camshaft follower for installation reference.
  6. Remove valve adjusting pads one at a time. Using a 1" outside micrometer, measure original pad thickness and note reading. Using this measurement and measurement reading taken in step 5) of CHECKING CLEARANCE (6.0L) above, calculate size of shim required. Select adjusting pad equal to measurement and install pad on top of valve spring collar.
  7. Adjusting pads are available from .085-.108" (2.16-2.74 mm) in increments of .005" (.13 mm). Install camshaft followers into their original locations.
  8. Lubricate camshaft journals with clean engine oil. Install camshaft using timing gauge to position camshaft correctly. Install bearing caps and progressively tighten nuts 96-125 INCH lbs. (11-14 N.m), starting at center cap and working outward. Ensure timing gauge is in position.
  9. Engage camshaft sprocket to camshaft. Install one lock tab and 2 bolts. Remove timing gauge and camshaft sprocket retainer. Rotate crankshaft until remaining bolt holes are accessible. Install remaining lock tab and bolts. Tighten bolts 17-20 ft. lbs. (23-27 N.m). Recheck valve clearances. Repeat steps 5)-9) for right side valve adjustment.
  10. Fit chain tension retainer and raise timing chain tensioner slightly. Insert chain tensioner releaser through timing cover access hole. Release locking catch and allow tensioner to expand. Remove chain tension retainer and releaser.
  11. Install new rubber grommet in front timing cover. Clean camshaft cover gasket surfaces. Install new camshaft cover seals and gaskets. Install camshaft covers. Tighten bolts 80-107 INCH lbs. (9-12 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
