Valve Clearance Inspection: I35
- Valve clearance check must be done while engine is cold. Remove ornament cover.
- Remove air duct with air cleaner case, collectors, hoses wires, harnesses connectors and so on.
- Remove intake manifold collectors. Remove ignition coils and spark plugs.
- Remove right and left rocker covers.
- Set cylinder No. 1 at TDC on its compression stroke. See Fig 1.
- Align pointer with TDC mark on crankshaft pulley.
- Check that valve lifters on cylinder No. 1 are loose and valve lifters are No. 4 are tight. If not, turn crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and align accordingly. See Fig 2.
- Check the valve listed. See Fig 1.
- User a feeler gauge, measure clearance between valve lifter and camshaft. For specifications, see VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Turn crankshaft 240 degrees and align properly. See Fig 2.
- Set cylinder No. 3 at TDC on its compression stroke. Check valves listed. See Fig 3.
- Turn crankshaft 240 degrees and align properly. See Fig 2.
- Set cylinder No. 5 at TDC on its compression stroke. Check valves listed. See Fig 4.
- If valves are out of specification, adjust the clearances. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT . If all valve clearances are within specification, install the following parts:
- Intake manifold collectors.
- Right and left rocker covers.
- All spark plugs.
- All ignition coils.
NOTE:
Record any valve clearance measurements which are out of specifications. Information will be used later to determine the required replacement valve lifter.
