Procedure (A/T)
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PNP switch harness connector. See Fig 1. Check continuity between engine ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). Also check circuit for short to voltage. Repair as necessary and retest system. If ground circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Check continuity of Green/Orange wire between PNP switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 44. See Figure. Also check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. Repair as necessary and retest system. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Check continuity between PNP switch terminals No. 1 and 2. See Fig 2. With transmission in Park or Neutral, continuity should exist. With transmission in any other gear, continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to step 5. If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect gearshift cable from transmission and repeat step 3. If continuity is still not as specified, replace PNP switch and retest system. If continuity is as specified, adjust gearshift cable. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
