DTC Test No. 4 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
NOTE:
For Engine Control Module (ECM) connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS section in this article. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - TURBO
article.
NOTE:
Possible causes for DTC are: defective engine coolant temperature sensor, loose connector, open or shorted engine coolant temperature sensor wiring circuit or defective ECM.
- Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on engine coolant temperature sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE at end of TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. If engine coolant temperature sensor does not operate correctly, go to step 3). If engine coolant temperature sensor operates correctly, go to next step.
- Conditions required to set DTC are not present at this time. Engine coolant temperature sensor delivers input signal to ECM to indicate engine coolant temperature. ECM monitors input signal from engine coolant temperature sensor to determine if input signal voltage is within specification and that input signal voltage does not decrease during engine warm-up. Check for intermittent problem. See INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS section in this article.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector from engine coolant temperature sensor. Engine coolant temperature sensor is located in coolant housing on passenger's side front of engine, below coolant filler cap. Engine coolant temperature sensor has a Black wire and a Black/White wire in the connector.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between electrical terminals on engine coolant temperature sensor. Resistance should be within specification in relation to the engine coolant temperature. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE table.ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE
Engine Coolant Temp. Ohms 32°F (0°C) 5100-6500 68°F (20°C) 2100-2700 104°F (40°C) 900-1300 176°F (80°C) 260-360 - If engine coolant temperature sensor resistance is within specification, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature sensor resistance is not within specification, replace engine coolant temperature sensor.
- Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire) on wiring harness side of connector.
- Voltage should be 4.5-4.9 volts. Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) on wiring harness side of connector. Continuity should exist. If voltage is within specification and continuity exists, go to step 10). If voltage is not within specification or continuity does not exist, go to next step.
- Check for defective terminals or connections on 22-pin ECM connector B-56. The ECM is located below instrument panel, in front of center console.
- If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOMS at end of DTC TESTS. If no trouble symptom exists, check wiring harness between ECM and engine coolant temperature sensor. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. If wiring harness is defective, repair wiring harness.
- Check for defective terminals or connections on connector for engine coolant temperature sensor. If terminals or connections are defective, repair as necessary. If terminals and connections are okay, check for a trouble symptom. See TROUBLE SYMPTOMS at end of DTC TESTS. If no trouble symptom exists, replace ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, in front of center console.
