Test TC-18A: EVAP Purge Solenoid Circuit
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For component location and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Using scan tool read and record DTCs. On TJ, XJ and ZJ bodies, go to step 5) . On AB body, go to step 3) . On all other bodies, go to next step.
- Monitor PURGE SOLENOID STATE. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Disconnect EVAP purge solenoid vacuum hose (between EVAP purge solenoid and EVAP canister). If vacuum does not exist when scan tool displays DUTY CYCLE MORE THAN 0 PERCENT, go to step 9) . If vacuum exists in hose when scan tool displays DUTY CYCLE MORE THAN 0 PERCENT, go to step 5) .
- If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is not displayed or displayed count is not "0", go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter is displayed and displayed count is "0", go to step 9) .
- Using scan tool, read and record FREEZE FRAME data. Attempt to duplicate conditions in FREEZE FRAME data. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter changes to "0", go to step 9) . If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIPS counter does not change to "0", go to step 6) .
- Using scan tool, erase DTCs and actuate EVAP purge solenoid. Read DTCs. If EVAP PURGE SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC returns, go to step 9) . If DTC does not return, go to next step.
- Condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. EVAP PURGE SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC sets if actual state of EVAP purge solenoid operation does not match intended state. Possible causes are: open or shorted wiring to EVAP purge solenoid, defective EVAP purge solenoid or PCM. Go to next step.
- Check for defective wiring and connections at EVAP purge solenoid, PCM and fused voltage supply wiring to EVAP purge solenoid. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If wiring and connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read DTCs. Ensure actuator test is still running. Wiggle wiring harness from EVAP purge solenoid to PCM. If EVAP PURGE SOLENOID CIRCUIT DTC resets, repair wiring harness as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If DTC does not reset, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION . Test is complete. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP purge solenoid connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage on EVAP purge solenoid connector, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Black wire on AB body; Red/Light Green wire on TJ body; Orange wire on ZJ body; Dark Blue/White wire on all other bodies). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open fused ignition switch output circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of EVAP purge solenoid control circuit (Pink/White wire on BE/BR bodies; Pink/Black wire on all other bodies) between EVAP purge solenoid connector and PCM Gray connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open EVAP purge solenoid control circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Check resistance between ground and PCM Gray connector, EVAP purge solenoid control circuit (Pink/White wire on BE/BR bodies; Pink/Black wire on all other bodies). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in EVAP purge solenoid control circuit and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Reconnect EVAP purge solenoid connector. Turn ignition on. Using an external voltmeter, check voltage on PCM Gray connector, EVAP purge control solenoid circuit (Pink/White wire on BE/BR bodies; Pink/Black wire on all other bodies). If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace EVAP purge solenoid and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION . If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION .
