Power Steering Pump Initial Operation
For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING FLUID USAGE .
WARNING:
The fluid level should be checked with engine off to prevent injury from moving components.
CAUTION:
Use only Mopar(R) Power Steering Fluid or equivalent when filling power steering system. Do not use automatic transmission fluid. Do not overfill.
- Wipe filler cap clean, then check fluid level. The dipstick should indicate FULL COLD when fluid is at normal temperature of approximately 21°-27° C (70°-80° F). Raise vehicle's front wheels off ground. With ignition off, turn steering wheel to left until it reaches its stop. Slowly fill power steering reservoir to FULL COLD level. Leave filler cap off reservoir. With engine off, rotate steering wheel back and forth, lock-to-lock at least 20 times. All while, fluid level should be maintained at FULL COLD level.
- Start engine. With engine idling, Check and adjust fluid level. Return front wheels to center position. Lower vehicle to ground. Keep engine running for at least 2 minutes. Slowly rotate steering wheel in both directions. Verify following conditions:
- Smooth Power Assist
- Noiseless Operation
- Proper Fluid Level
- No System Leaks
- Proper Fluid Condition
- Stop engine. If all proper conditions apply, procedure is complete. If fluid is extremely foamy, allow vehicle to stand a few minutes and repeat above procedure.
