DTC Test No. 7: A/C Compressor Clutch Relay Circuit
NOTE:
During actuator test No. 9, A/C compressor clutch relay will turn on and off approximately every 1.4 seconds.
NOTE:
Circuit is monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is 10 volts or more. DTC is set when an open or short circuit is detected in A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit for 3 seconds. Possible causes for DTC to set are: compressor clutch relay open or shorted, A/C control circuit defective or inoperative driver circuit in PCM.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate A/C compressor clutch relay (actuator test No. 9). A/C compressor clutch relay is located in relay box. See Fig 1. If relay does not click, go to next step. If relay clicks, failure is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION .
- Turn ignition off. Remove A/C compressor clutch relay. Check continuity between terminals No. 1 and 3 at A/C compressor clutch relay (component side). See Fig 2. Continuity should exist. Check continuity between terminals No. 4 and 5 at A/C compressor clutch relay (component side). Continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace A/C compressor clutch relay.
- Apply battery voltage between terminals No. 1 and 3 at A/C compressor clutch relay (component side). Check continuity between terminals No. 4 and 5 at A/C compressor clutch relay (component side). Continuity should exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace A/C compressor clutch relay.
- Install A/C compressor clutch relay. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. PCM is located at left front corner of engine compartment, in front of Electronic Automatic Transmission Electronic Control Module (EATX-ECM), near relay box. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 64 (Green wire) at PCM harness connector A-78. See Fig 3. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair wiring between ignition switch and A/C compressor clutch relay, and/or repair wiring between A/C compressor clutch relay and PCM.
- Using a fused jumper wire, ground terminal No. 64 (Green wire) at PCM harness connector A-78. If A/C compressor clutch does not engage, go to next step. If A/C compressor clutch engages, repair A/C system as necessary. See appropriate MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
- Inspect PCM connectors for damaged wires or terminals. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair wiring as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect all disconnected components. Using scan tool, retrieve and record DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear DTCs. Test drive vehicle under conditions when DTC was set. If DTC returns, replace PCM. If DTC does not return, test is complete.
