TEST 64F - Diagnosing VSS Problem

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS at the end of this article. Perform VERIFICATION PROCEDURE VER-1 after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Using DRB-II, read engine controller status. If DRB-II does not display ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to step 3). If DRB-II displays ACTIVE ON THE BUS, raise and support vehicle.
  2. Start engine and place in gear. Using DRB-II, read VSS as vehicle speed is increased. If DRB-II displays proper speed, replace body control module. If DRB-II does not display proper speed, see appropriate G - TESTS W/ CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located between data link connector and battery on fenderwell. Disconnect body control module Black connector. Body controller is located behind right side kick panel. Check condition of connector and clean or repair connector as necessary.
  4. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance on CCD bus positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) between PCM connector terminal No. 26 and body control module Black connector terminal No. 7.
  5. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Violet/Brown wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, check resistance on CCD bus negative circuit (White/Black wire). Check resistance between PCM connector terminal No. 46 and body control module Black connector terminal No. 20.
  6. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open White/Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace body control module.
