SUBJECT

Electric Vacuum Pump Intermittent Failure 

SITUATION

The check engine light (CEL) is illuminated and the MSA malfunction check control message is present. No electric driving is possible. This situation may be intermittent or permanent.

The following fault codes are stored in the Electric Machine Electronics (EME):

CAUSE

Internal mechanical failure of the electric vacuum pump.

If intermittent, this leads to reduced vacuum and thus the associated fault codes. If not repaired, the amount of damage to the pump will increase to the point of a permanent failure.

PROCEDURE

Replace the vacuum pump with the updated part, P/N 34 33 6 857 404, per Repair Instruction REP 34 33 200, "Removing and installing/replacing electric vacuum pump."

NOTE: The vacuum pump must be replaced even if it functions correctly during ISTA/D test plan "AT1236_E2ELUP - Electrical vacuum pump."
