SUBJECT

Instrument Cluster and Control Display Revert to Metric Units

MODEL

E65, E66 (7 Series) up to 9/02 Production

SITUATION

Intermittently the Instrument Cluster and Control Display may switch from US settings to metric. For example, the mileage display changes to kilometers or the temperature display changes to Centigrade. This is may be accompanied by symptoms of intermittent MOST bus failures. For example:

Popping or crackling noise from speakers
Control Display is dark or blank
I Drive Controller is not responsive
BMW logo is displayed permanently on Control Display

CAUSE

The Instrument Cluster and Control Display switches to default (metric settings) and caused by:

Momentary loss of communication on the MOST bus.
Key is not correctly recognized by the CAS.
Key personalization number set to zero or incorrectly set.

CORRECTION

Diagnose and repair fault in MOST bus (refer to SI B61 15 02 )
Set Control Display "default" to US units (refer to SI B61 13 02 )
Check and if necessary reset key personalization number (refer to SI B61 13 02 )
